Freelancer Portal & Design News supported by Squarespace

This year, London Design Festival wanted to put the spotlight on the brilliance of London’s design scene at a time when it needs to be promoted more than ever. We recognise that freelancers in particular have been impacted by the pandemic, and the Festival wants to support this community by providing a voice to new talent and freelancers. As such, for 2020 we have created a freelancer portal supported by Squarespace, the all-in-one website building platform, where freelancers can share design content and their portfolio with the Festival audience.

We have also removed the paywall from the dedicated membership content so that everyone has free access to the library of design-led content. Hear from world-leading designers in conversation with Justyna Green, Bethan Ryder, Vince Frost and Grant Gibson; enjoy long reads and articles; and experience virtual exhibitions, tours and events from Partners across the creative industries.

The Typographic Circle Presents

The Typographic Circle was formed in 1976 to bring together anyone with an interest in type and typography. They are a not-for-profit organisation run entirely by volunteers and stage a variety of type and typography related events including a series of diverse monthly lectures by well-known industry speakers, and the annual New York Type Directors Club exhibition.

From the anatomy of type, and exploration of kerning and tracking, through to line spacing and leading, widows and orphans, The Typographic Circle share their favourite designs in their publication, Circular Magazine.

Design Documentaries, Films & Books

Each month, we share a selection of must-see films, documentaries and series for designers. From Helvetica to Abstract; A Space Odyssey to Rams; the curated collection offers a selection of design titles across disciplines to watch and enjoy.

Hedi Slimane, previously Creative Director of Yves Saint Laurent and Dior, and currently Artistic Director of Celine, has curated a selection of films to view during lockdown for MUBI. From hallmarks of Hollywood to cult classics, the newest directors, to the greatest, his choices are a snapshot of a cinematic sensibility.

Virtual Events and Exhibitions

As part of Brompton Design District for London Design Festival 2019, SEE••DS Gallery presented Masters of Disguise. The exhibition interpreted the District's theme, Nature/Nurture, by looking at the notion of human nature in the current era of hyper-visibility and culture of image obsession.

Curated by M–L–XL, Masters of Disguise explored individual identity, display and performance as represented by the mask. The designers, including Nathalie Du Pasquier, Jochen Holz, Martino Gamper, Michael Marriott, Soft Baroque and Sabine Marcelis, each created a mask which was then surrounded by objects they made, including furniture, lights, tableware, cutlery, glasses and vases.

The exhibition can be viewed online here.
