Earlier this year, the London Design Festival teamed up with Twitter in the UK to present a nationwide design competition called #PoweredByTweets: The Challenge.

The competition invited entrants to come up with an idea that either solves a problem using Twitter or creates something beautiful using Twitter data.

Already around the world, the live and public nature of Twitter has inspired people to create objects and installations that are powered by Tweets. A Tweet can make something move, light up or even fly and it happens in real time. This competition helped galvanise some of these ideas and attracted entries from across the country from creative agencies, media agencies and brands to universities, hospitals, start-ups and, of course, individuals.

The winning ideas were exhibited at Somerset House during the Festival in an exhibition designed by Bureau de Change. “We were blown away by the effort and hard work that went into the ideas,” stated Helen Lawrence, Head of Creative Agency Development at Twitter UK. “Twitter is a powerful platform that is used in so many unexpected ways, and this project has definitely reinforced that. It is incredible to see innovation like this, powered by Tweets, that could genuinely impact the way we live our day to day lives.”

The winners

There were six winners in total, with three in each category: ‘Solve a problem’ and ‘Create something beautiful.’ Each of the winning entries were built by Pixie Labs (@pixielabs). Winners received a Twitter Ads budget to help develop and spread their ideas even further.
